Authorized Users: What Piggybacking Does and Doesn’t Do

Being added to someone else’s credit card as an authorized user can import years of history into your file overnight. It’s the most powerful shortcut in credit building — and the most oversold.

How authorized-user reporting works

When a primary cardholder adds you as an authorized user, most major issuers report the account’s full history — age, limit, payment record — onto your credit file. You get the tradeline without a credit check, without legal liability for the debt, and often without ever touching the card.

What it can genuinely do

For a thin or young file, one old, clean, low-utilization tradeline can add average age, payment history, and available credit at once. The classic use case is a parent adding a child to a decade-old card that’s paid in full monthly. The account’s utilization reports on your file too — which is why the donor card must run low balances.

What it can’t do

It can’t fix negatives — collections and late payments on your own accounts are untouched. Newer FICO models also discount authorized-user tradelines specifically to blunt abuse, and many lenders apply extra scrutiny to files that are mostly AU history. A file built only on someone else’s card doesn’t demonstrate your own repayment behavior, and underwriters know it.

The tradeline-rental market — stay out

Paying a stranger to add you to their card (“buying a tradeline”) sits somewhere between gray-area and misrepresentation: you’re renting history to make a lender believe experience you don’t have. It’s expensive, temporary, discounted by modern scoring, and treated by lenders as a fraud signal when detected. The same money funds a secured card and a credit builder loan with permanent results.

Doing it right within a family

Pick the donor card deliberately: old, perfect payment record, utilization consistently under 10%, from an issuer that reports authorized users (most majors do). Confirm the primary’s habits won’t change — their new late payment becomes your late payment. And treat AU status as scaffolding: build your own primary tradelines alongside it, then let it go once your file stands alone.
